Created in Milan in 1845 by Bernardino Branca, this classic amaro has enjoyed somewhat of a resurgence in recent years. Its “proudly bitter” blend of herbal and liquorice flavours open up a world of cocktails. If you’re wary, do as they do in a San Francisco “Bartender’s Handshake”, where a shot is followed by a Ginger Beer chaser. But for the purists, simply sip straight, chilled, and over ice.
